STAGE-STE

EUROPEAN ENERGY RESEARCH ALLIANCE

This project has received funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n. 609837

WP1 Consortium Governance and Management Issues
WP2 Integrating Activities to Lay the Foundations for Long-lasting Research Cooperation
WP3 Enhancement of STE Research Facilities Cooperation
WP4 Capacity Building and Training Activities
WP5 Relationship with Industry & Transfer of Knowledge Activities
WP6 International Cooperation Activities
WP7: Thermal Energy Storage for STE Plants
WP8: Materials for Solar Receivers and STE Components
WP9: Solar Fuels
WP10: STE plus Desalination
WP11: Linear focusing STE Technologies
WP12: Point focusing STE Technologies

WP1 is devoted to project management and consortium governance issues, including the definition of governance of the future “STAGE-STE+” European organization, which should integrate all relevant European research STE organizations (current partners of the IRP plus additional ones that would like to join the initiative). A relevant consortium issue such as how to deal with the internal Intellectual Property (IP) management, closely related with the organization of current and future structures is also addressed within this WP1. WP2 is addressed to the integration and coordination of national research programmes in STE to lay the foundations of long-lasting research cooperation in Europe; this will include the lobbying activities to national funding agencies and other relevant public bodies to the leveraging of national funds at European level and the definition of European STE research agenda. WP3 is devoted to the coordination activities to enhance the cooperation and use of STE research facilities. This will include the improvement of transnational access and enhancement of current infrastructures as well as the close coordination with other relevant on-going STE initiatives related with research infrastructures.

WP4 is focused on capacity building and training activities. Within this WP a comprehensive plan of exchange of researchers, involving all European participant research organizations, has been defined to strongly increase the collaboration of research activities through the exchange of staff and knowledge between organizations (see section 1.3.5). In addition some relevant training activities are also addressed within this WP at European level. WP5 is addressed to enhance and improve the relationship with the industry and the transfer of knowledge activities. This will include all relevant topics related with IP issues (know-how created by the project, the existing results owned by the partners and also third party know-how) and the definition of the Plan for Use and Dissemination of the Foreground (PUDF) and the associated dissemination activities. Also, WP5 will include the definition of guidelines for standardization of STE components, which is an important and urgent topic currently needed by the industry (not addressed by any other on-going initiative). WP6 is devoted to coordinate a large and intense international collaboration programme involving top STE worldwide research organizations from the world regions with the highest solar radiation potential (North Africa and Middle East, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Australia and China). Also, collaboration with already existing organizations (such as SolarPACES) will be addressed in this WP.

WPs 7 to 12 involve 6 parallel individual research projects dealing with the whole current spectrum of STE research activities. Each WP is devoted to address the execution of considered most urgent research activities according to the defined EERA Subprogrames, complemented with the missing elements to address the indicated whole spectrum of research activities:

  • Thermal Energy Storage for STE Plants
  • Materials for Solar Receivers and STE Components
  • Solar Fuels
  • STE plus Desalination
  • Linear focusing STE Technologies
  • Point focusing STE Technologies

Each of these individual projects has been defined integrating either on-going or expected national initiatives/projects and/or in-kind national budgetary contributions to promote and foster the consecution, unification and coordination of national funds in addition to the European Commission ones. On an average level, national funds provided by the European research partners are equivalent to about twice the contribution requested to the EC. Two important additional items related with the project methodology is, on one hand, the intense program on exchange of researchers (WP4), which will provide the best guarantee to achieve the defined research objectives. On the other hand, the extensive international collaboration programme defined under the scheme of lab-to-lab collaboration to provide relevant additional contributions to the research activities defined within WP7 to WP12. With this approach, a continuous interaction between CSA activities (WPs 1 to 6) and CP activities (WPs 7 to 12) is guaranteed.
